We all seek freedom in our lives. What would it be like not to have the freedom to believe and live as we choose, or the freedom to make our own decisions? As Americans, we take for granted the rights and privileges as citizens of this great country. Even so, though we live in challenging times, God has bestowed on us the gift of freedom. At this time of year, when we celebrate our nation’s independence, we need to realize that freedom is a gift from God.
When I was in 8th grade, each member of the class had to choose a topic to memorize and present. For some reason, the “Four Freedoms” outlined by President Franklin Roosevelt in his 1941 State of the Union address were my choice.
President Roosevelt spoke of Freedom of Speech and Expression, in which everyone has the right to voice their opinions anywhere in the world. He also described Freedom of Worship, where every person should be able to practice their religion in their own way. In addition, Freedom from Want expresses economic understandings that secure a healthy, peaceful life for all nations, and Freedom from Fear states that no nation can commit physical aggression against any neighbor, through a worldwide reduction in armaments.
In 2026, not all of these “freedoms” are fully realized; nonetheless, they remind us that there is still work to do in these areas. They also remind us that freedom is a gift we must continue to protect and value.
God has given humanity free will. We have the liberty to follow our own desires, but we are accountable for the resulting consequences.
True spiritual liberty does not give us the right to be selfish in our ambitions. Rather, we should strive to serve one another humbly in love. May the Holy Spirit guide us in all that we do and say!
