In the second reading at Mass this weekend, St. Peter encourages his readers (Christians facing persecution and martyrdom) to “always be ready to give explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason to hope” (1 Peter 3:15).

One of the best ways to get someone’s attention is to say, “Have you heard the really awful news?” Ears always perk up, as we are eager to hear and quickly share bad news. During this Easter Season, however, the Church is eager to share the Good News of Christ’s Resurrection. In today’s Gospel, Jesus gives His disciples hope by promising that He will not leave them orphans but will remain present to them through the outpouring of His Spirit.

This week, each of us will certainly encounter at least one person who needs a reason to hope. It may be someone who is seriously or terminally ill, in a failing relationship, in need of employment, grieving the loss of a loved one, or living in shame because of something wrong they have done.

One way we can offer hope is by sharing our faith in the Resurrection. We ourselves will share in the Resurrection to new life. God’s grace is more powerful than sin, and love is more powerful than hate. Jesus continues to be present in our lives.

We can also offer hope by simply taking time to listen to someone in need, making it clear that we will stand by and support them. We may also share how we ourselves have had similar experiences and come through them.

Retrouvaille is a ministry that offers hope to couples in troubled marriages. Leaders in this ministry share how they navigated a dying marriage and revived their relationship, restoring their love and trust. In addition, our grief ministry provides space for those grieving the loss of a loved one to share their stories, giving hope as they accompany each other on the road of grief.

Let’s be excited about sharing hope this week. Don’t wait. Do it now!
