We often say, “Nothing can get in God’s way.” But this Sunday’s readings challenge us to consider an uncomfortable reality, sometimes we do.
Peter thinks he knows what should happen next. When Jesus explains to him the suffering that lies ahead, Peter objects and Jesus responds “You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.” Peter’s thought process is not bad. His thinking is simply limited by what he can see and understand, we can fall into the same trap.
That will never work. I’m not the right person. It’s too difficult. I don’t want to have that conversation. Someone else can do it. Sometimes God is calling us toward something, but our own thoughts, fears, and desire for comfort convince us to resist.
In the first reading, Jeremiah understands that struggle too. Ridiculed for speaking God’s word, he wants to quit. Yet God’s word becomes like a fire within him that he cannot hold back. In the second reading, Paul offers the same challenge: “Do not conform yourselves to this age, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.” Then Jesus gives us words we might rather avoid: deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow me.
Following Christ will not always make sense according to our way of thinking. It will sometimes require discomfort, sacrifice, forgiveness, courage, or change. God may show us the way, but He still gives us the freedom to follow or resist. It is up to us!
