If you are ever tempted to say, “Why would God want me?” think about the people Jesus chose to be his closest advisors. The twelve apostles were not exactly the brain trust of first century Palestine. They were simple, ordinary folk. They were not theologians or politicians. They weren’t great orators or influencers, yet Jesus chose them to go out and proclaim the Gospel.
God chooses a variety of people to do his will. Moreover, God wants everyone to experience his love and mercy. Like the first disciples, we often run away from God (remember the disciples scattering after Jesus was arrested). Sometimes we may even deny God, like Peter denied Jesus. But God still wants us.
God wants us with all of our faults and failings. God wants us despite our shortcomings and foibles. Like the military recruitment posters of the past that said, “Uncle Sam wants you!” God wants us for his own.
So, if you are so loved and wanted, what is your excuse for running away from God? What is your reason for chasing after people and situations which will probably disappoint you or even reject you? But if God is always for us, who cares if others are against us.
This week, reflect on how much you are loved and wanted by God and give thanks.
