“Yes, My Lord”

Throughout our daily lives, we constantly make decisions with a yes-or-no response. However, what happens when a life-altering event or situation arises? Our response can be tough, if not downright scary. Everyone will, encounter a moment when an important decision has to be made. Do we seek the Lord’s guidance and will for us? On the other hand, do we do it all on our own?

During Advent, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, and we recall Mary’s decision when the Archangel Gabriel asked her the question of all time, to be Mother of the Redeemer. Mary’s response, “I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled” (Luke 1:38), was a bold and selfless decision. Mary’s “yes” must have been a complicated answer. By saying that one word, she had to put aside all her plans and expectations. She would have to face judgmental remarks from her community. Moreover, as scripture indicates, she endured suffering and hardship, including the future crucifixion of her son. Putting ourselves in her shoes, what would our response be?

That particular question will not be asked. However, do we take to heart the words of the Lord’s Prayer, “Thy will be done,” lightly, or do we accept it, trusting in God’s divine providence in all our decision-making.

Like that of Mary, she wholeheartedly responded: “Yes, my Lord! The question is we willing to do the same. As we continue to celebrate the Season of Advent, a time of joyful anticipation, may we always be open to His will by saying yes, as we prepare to commemorate the birth of our Lord!
