With Hands Lifted Up

We Praise You, O Lord! This past Sunday, the Church celebrated another great Solemnity of the Easter Season, the Ascension of the Lord. This Holy Event reminds us of the importance of meditating on its connection to our lives and spiritual journey. To understand this connection, let us consider the example Jesus gave his disciples.

Jesus lifted up his disciples, blessing them by providing emotional and spiritual support throughout his ministry—even during times of failure, fear, and physical need. Jesus was lifted up to heaven before their eyes, and the disciples’ lives were transformed. After receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, they were empowered to go out and preach to all nations, sharing all they had learned from the Master. As Baptized Catholic Christians, nourished at the Eucharistic Table and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we are encouraged to do the same. We can uplift those in need by sharing words of support with friends facing difficult times or by simply listening to those who feel alone. Both can be rewarding experiences. Being active in church ministries such as hospitality, music, prayer groups, or children’s formation also gives you opportunities to bless others. In the community, you might check on an elderly neighbor, visit a sick friend, volunteer at a pantry, babysit for a parent, or organize a cleanup. Through his words and deeds, Jesus showed these ordinary disciples what it means to serve. Today, he continues to do the same to us.

Our parish Evangelical Charity Ministry focuses on many of these corporal and spiritual works of mercy throughout the year. This week, choose one action—such as visiting a sick friend, helping a neighbor, or joining a parish ministry—to lift up someone in need. Decide how your God-given talents can help, make a concrete plan, and commit to completing that action by week’s end. A simple, purposeful gesture can bless others and answer God’s call.
