Every October, the Church renews its commitment to global missionary work, and we are encouraged to support the cause in any way possible. Most often, we are to share whatever monetary means we can afford so the missionaries in the world have the financial means to fulfill their vocation of Evangelization. Missionary work encompasses many areas where we can contribute; consider missionary work in a broader sense. For instance, we can volunteer at local shelters, visit the sick in hospitals, or help the elderly in our community. We are encouraged to embrace the role of missionary disciples, sharing the Gospel with all whom we meet. We do not need to be in a remote part of the world; our work is here and now. We live in challenging times and need to be a witness to God’s presence through our actions and words.
Evangelical Charity comes in different forms. Throughout the year, there are numerous opportunities at your parish to support the needs of others. As mentioned, financial support, through our generous donations, aids the Church’s mission. Your contributions, no matter how small, make a significant difference in the lives of those we serve. However, how about prayer, praying for the safety of missionaries who are spreading the Gospel in many dangerous areas of the world? Awareness and Education, understanding the way we can inspire others. There is always the spiritual enrichment aspect of participating in the Mission of the Church, first to build a relationship with Jesus. Echoing the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi’s commitment to “preach the Gospel at all times; when necessary use words.” That living out faith through compassionate acts is powerful. As the song says, “We are Christians by our Love” allows us to demonstrate love and fellowship with believers and non-believers alike.
So let this Mission Sunday be a constant reminder that being a disciple of Christ is not just for one day a year. Still, for a lifetime, reminding us “We are called to act with justice, we are called to love tenderly, we are called to serve one another, to walk humbly with God…”
