Summer Reflections: Wonder and Awe

Summers in Michigan are filled with vacations—often to the beautiful Upper Peninsula or one of the many stunning inland lakes. Vacations are a gift to families, offering time to reconnect, explore, and unwind. But amidst the packed schedules and activities, do you carve out moments simply to slow down and be present?

This Sunday’s Gospel brings us the familiar story of Martha and Mary. Martha is busy tending to all the details of hospitality, while Mary chooses to sit at the feet of Jesus. Martha is active, but Mary is present. Both are expressions of love, but Jesus reminds us that being fully present—like Mary—is the “better part.”

When we embrace the Gift of the Holy Spirit called Wonder and Awe, we gain the ability to pause, step back, and recognize God’s presence all around us.

As you vacation this summer, may you intentionally lean into this gift. Take time to notice the beauty of Michigan’s lakes and forests—and even more so, the beauty in those around you. In doing so, you might just experience a little more of God’s peace.
