Joy to the New Year

A new year always brings talk of resolutions from eating better to getting more organized, exercising more, and saving money. But this year, I’ve been thinking about something deeper: how I can live with more joy.

It’s tempting to believe that joy is something that just happens to us… like when circumstances improve, when people treat us better, when stress finally settles down (but does it ever?). When we feel frustrated, burnt out, or discouraged, it can be easy to blame the people around us or the situations we’re in. But real joy doesn’t come from everyone else getting things right. Joy begins within us, and it begins with gratitude.

Joy grows when we intentionally notice what is good, when we choose to thank God for small blessings, and when we express appreciation to the people in our lives instead of assuming they already know. Gratitude turns our focus away from what is missing and helps us recognize how much we’ve already been given.

And joy is not just something we receive, but it should also be something we offer to others. We can bring joy into our homes, our workplaces, our friendships, and our parish simply by being encouraging, patient, and kind. Sometimes the greatest gift we give others is the decision to show up as people of hope rather than frustration. Not sure what to say? Start with a smile and a “hello” or “thank you” for something.

This year, instead of waiting for life to feel easier or more perfect, I want to choose joy by thanking God more intentionally, by expressing appreciation more, and by becoming a source of joy for others because joy isn’t something we find by accident. It’s something we grow, one grateful moment at a time.
