As I grow older, autumn, which begins next Monday, has come to be my favorite season of the year. Every religion sees major lessons we can learn from this season.
Here are a few things autumn teaches me:
Autumn teaches me to let go
During this season, trees let go of their leaves because they are no longer needed. Autumn reminds me of those things I have to let go of in order to thrive and grow in my spiritual life.
Autumn teaches me to celebrate endings
Leaves do not just disappear. They go out with a sense of flair and beauty. Fall reminds me to take time to recognize the joys and blessings of the year, but then move on, or “shed” what has not been good for me. It is time for the beginning of a new chapter!
Autumn teaches me that I am a part of nature
During this season of autumn, we will celebrate the solemnity of “Jesus Christ, King of the Universe.” Jesus is the King of all creation, of which we are a part. In the fall, I stand in awe of the beauty of all created things and celebrate that all creation is part of my human family.
Autumn teaches me to slow down
After the busyness of summer, with its many activities, autumn invites me to slow down. I observe the subtle differences in nature. I take a gentle walk through fallen leaves and breathe in the refreshing fall air.
Autumn teaches me of trust and hope
As nature begins to “die,” and I prepare for the cold and dark of winter, I hope that spring will come. I trust that new growth and beauty will come. This supports my hope and trust in God during the dark and cold times in my life.
