4 Ways to Lower Stress and Create Room for God

I know that I am stressed when I realize that my breathing is “off.” Whether more shallow, rapid, or whatever, that sense of not taking full and deep breaths signals to me that I need to stop, and do exactly that- breathe! How about you? Is your schedule overloaded, or do you face other stress inducing factors in your life? If so, what is your signal that’s telling you that it’s time to decompress?

In a world that seems to be focused on always doing more, I encourage you to deepen your relationship with God by taking time to do less. God ispresent in creation; in the love shown to a person in need; in forgiveness; and in other acts of kindness. It is our job to create the space we need so we can recognize God’s presence all around us. As scripture says, “Be still, and know that I am God,” (Psalm 46:10).

Here are few ideas for creating some room to recognize God:

  1. Schedule down time, away from commitments, and honor that schedule. The same thing goes for all of our devices. (You already know this tip. Use this article as the catalyst for actually doing it.)
  2. Immerse yourself in nature by checking out a new-to-you state or county park, so you’ll have some new scenery in your life, then just sit. Rather than using this suggestion as an excuse for more activity in your life, use the park visit as a place that gives you permission to feel the breeze and sun on your skin, listening to and seeing the gifts of God’s creation.
  3. End your day by taking a moment to think of one thing you are grateful for. You don’t have to make a big production of it by buying a “gratitude journal,” and all of that jazz (although you could)! Do what’s doable.
  4. When you notice your “I’m stressed signal,” take a quick step into an unoccupied room, close your eyes, and just breathe… fully and deeply. Stand, or sit, in that stillness as long as you can. While doing so, you might want to repeat Psalm 46:10: “Be still and know that I am God.”
