The Season focuses on Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving to help us lead a better Christian life. Almsgiving is an essential part of this journey. When we think of the Evangelical Charity Ministry, the Corporal Works of Mercy come to mind. Through these works, we offer charitable actions
to help our neighbors with their bodily and basic human needs. These “Works” could be considered a model for this vital ministry of the Church. Hopefully, most of us have included more Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving during this 40-day Season. The “My Lenten Journal” has been provided as an extra resource to help us experience a more meaningful preparation for Easter.
Have you taken the time to include any of the following seven Works:
- Feed the Hungry? Donate food to needy people, make dinner for a neighbor, or eliminate waste by not purchasing more than needed?
- Give Drink to the Thirsty? Donating water to those devastated by natural disasters or to a homeless shelter. Remember to conserve water at home.
- Shelter the Homeless? Supporting local organizations that assist those needing shelter, making warm blankets, advocating for those marginalized in society, or working for peace and justice.
- Visit the Sick? Visiting those in hospitals, nursing homes, or homebound and devoting time to check in on an elderly neighbor.
- Visit those in Prison? Remembering that the incarcerated are also in need of God’s love. We can share that by visiting or getting involved in a prison ministry or juvenile detention program. Some people feel like they are imprisoned in their homes, emotionally and physically; take the time to show them love and support.
- Burying the Dead? It is an opportunity to grieve and show others support. But it goes beyond just visiting them at the funeral home or the service. Be a source of strength to those who have lost a loved one in the months to come. Please send a card or check in on them. Even take the time to visit the cemetery and pray for those you have lost.
- Alms to the Poor? Many programs provide support and services for those in need yearly. Find a charity close to your heart, like packing meals for the homebound, or donate the extra money you may otherwise squander.
Reflecting on the seven Works and how you can be of service is like examining your conscience before receiving the sacrament of Reconciliation. Though Easter is fast approaching, there is still time to make a difference. Let this spirit of giving continue throughout the year.
