As we continue on our Lenten journey I would like to look at some of the spiritual benefits of fasting. Fasting is a discipline in every major religion, including our Catholic faith. Fasting is not only an act of physical deprivation but a powerful means of drawing closer to God.
1. Fasting teaches us the virtue of self-control
The practice of fasting fosters the virtue of temperance, helping us master our desires rather than being enslaved by them. Through fasting we train our will to say “no” to sin and “yes” to grace.
2. Fasting teaches us humility
Fasting reminds us of our human frailty, and our dependence on God and each other. It helps us to align our hearts with God’s will.
3. Fasting opens our hearts to God’s presence
Fasting detaches us from worldly distractions and makes space for God. When we experience hunger, we are reminded of our spiritual hunger for Christ, the Bread of Life. (the purpose of the Eucharistic Fast).
4. Fasting teaches us compassion
Through experiencing hunger pains, we are more ready to reach out to feed the hungry when the opportunity presents itself.
Let us embrace fasting with joy and devotion, following the example of the saints and Christ Himself, who fasted out of love for the Father and for us.
