Halloween is just around the corner—only 10 days away! Are you ready to share your faith? Many Catholics wonder if it’s appropriate to celebrate Halloween, but did you know that Halloween has Catholic roots? The word itself is linked to a Catholic feast day. It comes from “All Hallow’s Eve,” which refers to the evening before All Saints Day (All Hallows Day). “Hallow” means “holy,” as in “hallowed be Thy name” from the Lord’s Prayer. So, don’t shy away from celebrating! Embrace both Halloween and your Catholic identity. Here are three meaningful ways to express your faith this Halloween:
1. Dress as a Saint.
Halloween costumes are often spooky, but why not show a joyful side by dressing as a saint? You could be St. Nicholas, St. Teresa of Calcutta, or St. Thérèse of Lisieux. When people ask about your costume, take the opportunity to share the story of the saint you’re representing!
2. Give special treats for meaningful costumes.
A priest I know always prepared extra-special Halloween treat bags for children dressed as angels or saints. Recognizing and rewarding tasteful costumes can say a lot about what we value. A thoughtful gesture like this can spark meaningful conversations.
3. Show your Catholic faith at your door.
Each time a child comes trick-or-treating at your door is an opportunity for an encounter. Consider placing a crucifix or a picture of a saint near your door. If someone asks about it, be ready to share its significance. Above all, greet your visitors with warmth and joy—your kindness can be a powerful witness to your faith.
Wishing you a Happy—and Holy—Halloween!
