8 Ways to Honor the Earth

April 22 is our annual celebration of Earth Day, when communities throughout the world recognize our oneness with creation, our common home, and everything that creation provides for us.

The first reading at the Easter Vigil tells the story of creation, reminding us that all of creation is good and that God has made us stewards of it. Care for Creation, one of the core principles of Catholic Social Teaching, was a primary concern of Pope Francis, who wrote two powerful letters on the topic: Laudato Si’ and Laudate Deum. Reading and reflecting on these letters is a meaningful way to prepare for Earth Day.

As a simple reminder, here are a few ways we can honor the earth throughout the year by making more sustainable choices in our daily lives:

  1. Recycle
  2. Compost
  3. Start a home garden
  4. Use energy efficient light bulbs
  5. Run full loads in washing machines
  6. Drive more efficiently
  7. Use reusable bags
  8. Conserve energy

Committing to even one small change can lead to a more sustainable lifestyle, and the impact can be significant. In doing so, we honor one of the most important teachings of our faith.
